Ice3 Launches a Kickstarter to Start a Store

One of the newest and most exciting food trucks to hit the streets of Chicago, Ice3, has recently launched a Kickstarter campaign to realize a brick and mortar addition for their iced creations - an “ice lounge”. As a truck, Ice3 specializes in original flavors of small batch ice cream, hand-crafted ice pops and frozen libations. I happen to be a huge fan of their “Chicago” prix fixe ice pop. Imagine having a frozen Goose Island Matilda slushie along with chilled versions of a Chicago hot dog and pizza slice finishing with the flavors of a Frango mint ice cream. It was a delicious Chicago adventure on a stick!

Now, for those unfamiliar with Kickstarter, it is a popular online pledge system that has been helping its users fund various projects and endeavors. From their Kickstarter site, Owner Erika Stone-Miller and Chef Adam Harralson write about their plans to create America’s first “Ice Lounge”:

“Definitely not an old school ice cream parlor and not a bar with walls of ice. Our space has been designed to be modern and stylish but comfortable so you can sit, relax and chill with your peeps. An ice cream lounge that is kid friendly, not kid-centric so Mom and Dad can really enjoy the tradition of taking the family out for ice cream while enjoying some of the most creative and delicious ice concoctions to be found. Few Spirits Bourbon Milkshake anyone? Or maybe a Half Acre Chocolate Camaro Stout & Espresso ice cream float? Perhaps a glass of Rosepetal Gwertzraminer Iced Champagne?

We have the perfect location: great visibility and foot traffic, we love the neighborhood and there’s such an eclectic mix of cultures-the perfect place for a young innovative company to lay down roots and nurture our passion to explore the boundaries of our two favorite indulgences: all things ice and locally produced spirits.”

As of this morning, they’ve started out strong with 19 backers for the project so far. Let’s help Ice3 get the funding to get an Ice Lounge in Chicago! Please follow this link to donate to their Kickstarter campaign: https://kck.st/PCLKLs

New Truck Alert: Brown Sugar Café

Truck owner Eunice Jackson with her truck

Brown Sugar Café is going to be one of the new kids on the block…next week! Brown Sugar scheduled to launch their dessert truck on September 30, 2011.

“Everything is baked from scratch with high quality ingredients,” says truck owner Eunice Jackson, who has over 20 years of baking experience. She said that the recipes are inspired by her Southern roots. She grew up in Chicago while spending her summers down south.

Opening a traditional bakery didn’t appeal to Eunice. “I never really was interested in a storefront because I’m not fond of fixed hours. I prefer the flexiblity and greater customer exposure.” A girl after our own hearts. So, what is her favorite part about the food truck scene? “I love the flexibility, the diversity of foods available, the diverse group of people you come in contact with, and getting into the neighborhoods to enjoy our beautiful city!” She has even been on the consumer end of food trucks, noting 5411′s beef empanada and Taquero Fusion tacos among her favorite dishes, and she said she is stoked to try food from all of our city’s trucks!

Even though Jackson has “no intentions of baking on the truck,” she said that current legislation affects her menu. How so? ”Assembling some items sometime is nice because it allows for a fresher tasting product. So those items in that category I just won’t offer because I refuse to sacrifice taste or quality.”

The Brown Sugar truck menu will rotate items daily and include desserts such as cupcakes, cookies, brownies and a variety of other pastries. Brown Sugar also offers to roll up to the curb for private parties, corporate delivery orders, and catering services.

When Cupcakes Get Flirty

My first food truck experience with the wonderful Flirty Cupcakes many months ago. I had heard about Big Blue, the nickname for the truck itself, from coworkers. We hiked through the meat packing trucks down Fulton in freezing weather to try Flirty’s cupcakes. If you have ever seen Big Blue up close and personal, you’ll notice the whimsical decorative touches like the pink pom-pom trim around the service window.

Caution: This is just an image; do not lick your screen. This is Flirty's red velvety goodness. Doesn't that super creamy icing make you want to dive right into it?

The story of Flirty cupcakes is a sweet one (ba-dum-chh). It all began when Flirty founder Tiffany spotted an old school ice cream truck and was (emotionally) transported back to her childhood. She said, “It made me think… there is certainly a void in my adult life for something so simple yet so enjoyable!” What I love about this story is that Flirty cupcakes absolutely delivers that same experience. I overhear girls I work with giddily echo Tiffany’s excitement whenever her Big Blue is near.

Ordering a cupcake from Flirty

The Flirty Cupcake menu changes constantly. They have seasonal flavors and unique new variations all the time. Plus, their cupcakes all have cute names (a small but thoughtful detail that many Food Truck Freaks appreciate). They are also very diligent about posting their schedule in advance, making it easy to catch them. They make many stops every day and seem to canvas the city (and sometimes, suburbs) pretty thoroughly.

In Chicago we are pretty spoiled with all of the amazing cupcake shops we have in town. Flirty offers a wide variety of less traditional flavors. Don’t get me wrong, I love their sugary treats and get them often, but they are somewhat standard. I keep going back for them because Big Blue often stops by my office and Flirty cupcakes brighten up any workday.

I tend to order the red velvet cupcake, but also get an additional (more adventurous) cupcake and give the red velvet to a coworker if I end up digging the new flavor. Which flavors have you tried and loved? Which flavor should I get next time I flag down Big Blue?

New Truck Alert: Mama Green’s Gourmet Goodies

Get excited: a new dessert truck will soon be on the Chicago food truck scene! Mama Green’s Gourmet Goodies. We contacted Mama Green’s and they told us on July 14, 2011 that they’d be on the road “in 2 weeks.”

On their website, they say that “each of our gourmet goodies comes from our very own collection of heirloom family recipes.” The photos of the food they serve look a lot like what my grandma makes, so it already looks like they deliver on their promise of nostalgic sweets. However, their cookies aren’t just the standard oatmeal raisin variety (which they do sell), they will also offer options that are new to me, like chewy carrot spice.

The one menu item I am most anxious to try is the Red Velvet Crunch cookie. I’ve mentioned that I love red velvet cupcakes, and this inventive variation looks delicious. It is described as follows: “A classic American cake transformed into a moist and chewy cookie with a crispy crunch outer edge. Don’t worry, we didn’t forget the traditional cream cheese topping. Instead, we hid it inside as a sweet surprise.”

We’ll be sure to add them to our list of trucks once they start scheduling stops. You can bet I’ll be one of the first in line!

Check out their sale with Gilt Group going on now through Thursday 7/21!
